Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart* Refrigerator Retirement Program, which was launched in June 2011, is currently on target to meet its ultimate collection goal of 34,000 units in three years. To date, 11,000 energy-consuming appliances have been scheduled for pick-up.
At the program’s outset, Manitoba Hydro estimated there were more than 194,000 old and inefficient fridges and 150,000 old and inefficient freezers consuming energy in the province. Removing units ahead of their anticipated end of life saves Manitoba Hydro customers money by reducing their energy bills. Manitoba Hydro removes up to three units per household for free – at least one unit must be a refrigerator – and customers are further incentivized by a $40 rebate per unit.
